A device of gold color metal and enamel 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in width overall consisting of a maroon scroll bearing the motto "PROTECT AND PRESERVE" in gold letters and supporting a white cross having upon its center a scarlet equilateral triangle charged with a gold eight-rayed sun, and at either flank a gold serpent facing outward with tails entwined and ending outside the scroll at each side.
The colors white and maroon are used by the Medical Department. The scarlet triangle at center denotes the award of the Meritorious Unit Commendation for Asiatic-Pacific service in World War II, and it is charged with a Philippine sun symbol signifying the award of the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. The unit's four campaign credits are represented by the arms of the cross, and the serpents, derived from the Medical branch insignia, allude to hospital service.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 25 August 1969.
